Planning for Choirs

Finding New Choral Music

A wide range of new choral music is published each year. Sort through new music carefully, keeping what is doctrinal and usable.

  • Choral Reading Sessions:
    • attend sessions in your area to find newly-published music from a variety of publishers
    • while singing through the music, write meaningful comments on the cover of each piece to help you determine if and how to use the piece
    • include the cost for reading sessions in your annual budget

  • Publisher/Distributor Mailing Lists
    • get on the mailing lists of several publishers that offer newsletters and mailings for new music and worship materials
    • Lutheran publishers: NPH, CPH, Morning Star, Augsburg-Fortress
    • other publishers of sacred music: GIA, Alfred, Hope, Beckenhorst, and many others

  • Choral Subscription Plans
    • these offer individual copies of new music, often with a sample recording
    • costs vary for these; again, include in annual budget
    • especially useful if reading sessions are not available in your area
